BALCONY LABORATORY

As a laboratory for planting schemes and ways to improve biodiversity, studio audal installed a sequence of planters. Using the maximum capacity of the small niche on the gallery, the stacked garden showcases the benefits of urban green, even on great heights, in this case the sixth floor, attracting a big variety of various pollinators.

The structure works as tables carrying mortar tubs, and cladded with reused wooden planks from a neighboring demolition site. The element is fully dismountable and modular and offers hidden storage space for compost bins and garden tools.

Numerous plants for different conditions have been planted, experimenting with the shadow of the overhang, as well as the wind and sun exposure. Rather than planting the same species together in bigger groups, a mixed border with individual plants has been implemented, giving the opportunity for each plant to grow into its full potential. Each planter is irrigated with rainwater and a system of oyas . 

Over time, many pollinators have come to visit the stacked garden, including bumblebees, ladybugs, flies, butterflies and even a great tit. Various plants have proven to be more suitable for greater heights, while other combinations of plants have given inspiration to use in other projects. It has shown that the stacked garden is an evolving playground, giving plenty of insight in the use of plants and its relation to insects and birds.
