Spinnwebereiquartier
INTERNATIONALE BAUAUSSTELLUNG 2027 - UHINGHEN, DE - 2022
BLUE & GREEN WEAVING
Commissioned by the IBA27 in Stuttgart, the Spinnweberei Quartier is a competition entry that serves as a prototype for new urban design in the 21st century responding to the challenges of climate change, social imbalances and proposing developments with new construction methods and land-ownership models. Together with Superworld, studio audal drew an urban framework to implement the 26.000 m2 mixed function in a sustainable, biodiverse public space.
As one of the bigger economic pillars of Uhingen in the 19th and 20th century, the weaving factory was closed in 2017 and dismantled in 2019. The proposed scheme integrates the industrial memory of the site.
The public space concept revolves around a sequence of three squares defining the main public route through the area, connecting the main public street towards the train station. The two smaller sides on each side of the public road function as entrances to the development, having a various program connecting the blocks, whilst the central square provides an urban living room with a water feature only visible after a rainfall, fed by the surrounding SUDS. The building blocks are connected by lines of trees in four symbolic threads, weaving together the public spaces of the site. Local tree species, including ash, poplars, cherries and beach, grown on site in the first project phases, create a biophilic reference to the industrial weaving history of Uhingen.
