DREEF STREET
COLLABORATIVE STREETSCAPE - ‘T VELD, NL - 2024
NEIGHBOURHOUD INITIATIVE
The residents of the Dreef in ‘t Veld have taken it upon themselves to transform their streetscape into a nature-inclusive, blossoming haven. In recent years, due to maintenance costs, the borders once filled with roses have been replaced with turf. studio audal had the opportunity to assist the neighbourhood association in their discussions with the municipality and to draft a pollinator-friendly planting plan. Each resident has their own patch of lawn in front of their house, and after multiple meetings with the local association, a total of four neighbours decided to transform their patches into vibrant, year-round planting beds.
Collaborative design was key to the process. By selecting species that provide flowers, texture, and scent, more than 30 types of plants were included in the planting catalogue, with each border following its own theme. The design was celebrated during a collaborative planting day, when the community came together, and neighbours joined forces to bring their vision to life. Together, they planted over 2,000 plants among old logs, which serve as winter shelters for insects, creating a continuous flowering streetscape spanning more than 250m².
In the coming years, the plants will be maintained and monitored by the residents themselves, under the trust of the municipality services, with the hope of inspiring other streets and communities to take part as well.
